General Director of Zamil Steel Vietnam Mr. George E. Kobrossy has taken time off his busy schedule to attend a five-day ‘Lean Journey’ study mission to Japan from 1st to 5th June 2009. The purpose of the mission was for participants to gain leverage by learning of the successful implementation techniques of Lean at world-class companies.
The trip was occupied with many activities and visits to various companies that include big names like Toyota, Nissan and TOTO. Exclusive behind the scenes access from shop floor workers to management executives was presented to share their accumulated wealth of knowledge and explaining how they have learned from their mistakes and improved overall operation as a result.
‘Lean’ or Lean manufacturing is a production practice focuses to eliminate expenditure of resources that does not create value for the end customer. Basically, Lean is centered around creating more value with less work. Lean manufacturing is a process management philosophy derived originally from Japan which later identified generically as "Lean" in the 1990s. It is renowned for its focus on reduction of the original Toyota seven wastes in order to improve overall customer value.
“The successful implementation of Lean manufacturing in Japan is mainly due to their emphasis on details, practicality, consistency and determination to excel with a highly discipline work culture. Human Resource appears to be another important element which Japanese companies focus on. Japanese philosophy “Kaizen” is also well capitalized on the development and training of workforce,” George states after the trip. “The success factors observed during the trip will be the reference for future improvement initiatives of Zamil Steel Vietnam.”
